“When the sun goes down we will be grooving, when sun goes down we will be feeling alright”. If you are like me an love to spend time in your yard or garden in the evenings then its always nice to shed little light on the subject. One way we can do this is with proper garden lighting. Installing garden lights through out your yard not only transforms the look, and gives you more time for walking, working, and enjoying the beauty of your yard. It can also help you squeeze in a couple more hours for front porch sitting.
If you are considering installing garden lighting in your yard, then you need to determining what type of lighting is best for your yard. This is a crucial step that a lot of people leave out and they end up with a backyard nightmare. To avoid the nightmare and make the project simple you need to ask yourself a few general questions.
What are your expectations for garden lighting. Does your lighting need to be decorative, functional, or a combination of both? If you so desire you can design your lighting for purely practical reasons, like installing deck lights. You might have security concerns and would like lights setup with motion sensors. Or you might just need lighting so you can walk from the front yard to the back yard without tripping over the hose. Another reason to have garden lights is to highlight the beauty of your garden by shinning on an old oak tree. Whatever the reason you can find lighting that suits your needs.
There are four basic types of garden lights. Solar, gas, non powered, and electrical. Lets discuss the each of these in more detail.
Solar Lighting
Solar lighting is a simple and cost effective option. If you are not a handyman or do not want to hire a professional landscaper and electrician to install your lights, solar power is the way to go. No trenches to dig, no electrical wire to roll out and no bulky transformers taking up your outdoor electrical outlets. Just place your solar lighting where you would like it and the sun does the rest. There are many variety's to choose from as well. You can choose from solar spotlights to solar path lights for lining walkways, and even solar floodlights for accenting your garden. Just make sure you do your research online and choose the products with positive customer reviews.
Gas Powered Lighting
Garden lights such as Tiki Torches are fueled by gas. These are great for the occasional birthday party, but are not very practical if you plan on using them everyday. Gas powered lights have to be refueled and are at risk of being a fire hazard. Esthetically these type of lights can make your yard look very appealing, you just need to determine if this solution best fits your needs
Non-powered lighting
From the beginning of time humans have been fascinated with candles. Like gas-powered lighting, this type of lighting is subject to being a fire risk. But with the proper installation and flame enclosures installed, this is a reasonable safe and cost effective lighting solution. If your looking for a versatile solution that wont break the bank this is definitely and option for shedding some light on your back yard sanctuary.
Electrical Lighting
Electric lighting is more versatile. Use electric lighting for lighting paths, illuminating specific garden features or, as mentioned above, a motion sensor that activates when it senses movement. Low-voltage electric garden lighting is simple to install, but the transformer must be housed where it will not be at the weather's mercy. A garage or porch is ideal. For higher-voltage garden lighting systems, hire an electrician. A disadvantage to using electric lights for a garden path is that you must be careful to avoid the cords when you mow or use garden tools around them.
They are many resources online today, that you can use to research as well purchase garden lights for your yard. Whatever your garden lighting needs are you can be sure to find a solution that meets your needs and budget. So light up your yard today and you too will be grooving!
