Home is my favorite place to be. There is nothing like spending some time after a long days work, working in your yard in the cool of the evening. Or just sitting on the deck drinking a tall glass of ice tea feels pretty good as well. The only downside is, there are not enough hours in the day to enjoy it. The rat race of life has taken its course and it is here to stay.

What happened to the days when the summers seemed to last forever and life was in slow motion. Now it is as if life is speeding up at a rapid pace. As of yet I have not found a pause button for this journey called life, so I am determined to make the most of it. The only answer that I have found to this dilemma is to try to suck as much life out of each and everyday that I can. One way I have found to accomplish this, is by installing deck lights.

Deck Lights? You might be asking how in the world does deck lighting help with the rat race of life. Well I am glad you asked. If we can extend the hours of light we are giving each day, then there is more time for life to be enjoyed. Right? I know this is a crazy analogy but its not that far fetched. A low voltage deck lighting system is perfect addition to your home and can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Outdoor deck lighting is a improvement for any deck an the effect on your home is far greater than the modest price tag might suggest. It is a enhancement that should not be overlooked and needs to be planned with great care. Lets take a look at some of the things to consider before embarking on our do it yourself deck light project.

Planning

A successful deck lighting system is the result of careful planning that maximizes your decks potential. Identifying your lighting needs from the beginning, this will make the project go smoothly and you will be happy with the outcome. When planning make sure you consider two main factors, safety and appearance.

A common mistake made is installing deck lights in places that will shine into peoples eyes. This is uncomfortable and will create a unsafe environment. In general its a good idea to illuminate your stair treads that lead to and exit your decks surface. Also illuminate your hand railing by installing rail lights. This will ensure that your deck is lit properly, thus creating a safe environment to entertain guest in the evenings. Another thing to consider is to make sure you are lighting the deck and not your neighbors yard. Do not choose lights that are going to make your neighbors unhappy. Place your lights in such a way that nobody can see the light bulbs but can see the results on the decks surface. This will bring a aesthetically pleasing look and feel to your deck. It is difficult for people to enjoy time spent, on even the most aesthetically pleasing deck, with one or more lights glaring into their eyes.

Another good rule to follow is do not over light your deck. Design a light scheme where light spills over into the yard and flower beds rather than shinning directly onto the decks surface. This will give your deck a warmer feel as the light is illuminating outward. Also make sure to avoid under lighting as this will defeat the whole purpose of d this project. By taking the time to create correctly create your deck light design, you will be amazed when the sun goes down, the transformation your outdoor living space takes on.

Choosing The Right Deck Lights
